How did the Philippines lose the gold to Indonesia?
The Philippines lost a gold medal on Monday to Indonesia, after a 5-0 loss to the country’s top-ranked team, according to International Gold Awards, the official governing body for international sport.
The gold medal loss for Indonesia is the first time in Philippine history that a country has lost gold medals to Indonesia since 2002, according the Gold Award’s website.
It comes after the Philippines suffered a 3-1 defeat to the world’s top team in their final qualifying match, a 3:0 loss in a qualifier at the 2015 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Athletes from the Philippines, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand were also on the medal table for the final round of the event, which is to be held on May 14-16 in Hong Kong.
The medal loss is also the second time in recent memory that a Philippines team has lost a medal to a foreign team.
In 2009, the Philippines lost the gold medal in the men’s basketball tournament in Seoul, South Korea, when it was stripped for a match against the Chinese Taipei Warriors.
