NEW YORK (AP) An international internship program is proving that the word “intern” is not the word to use when talking about getting a job.
A national job board has named the International Internship Association (IIA) as the largest employer in the country, with more than 40,000 employees and $4.4 billion in annual revenue.
Its board of directors says IIA is growing by nearly 20% every year, from 6 million to 12 million positions.
Its top executive is a former U.S. ambassador.
Its main mission is to promote internship opportunities.
In 2015, it helped recruit more than 6,000 new interns, who were awarded an average of $11,000, according to the job board.
The average intern was earning $11.75 an hour.
The IIA’s board of trustees says the industry has benefited from more than a billion internships annually.
“We are seeing an influx of talent that is bringing a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience to our industry,” said the IIA board of director, Dr. Scott M. Schoelkopf.
“Internships are critical to our ability to succeed and grow.
Interns bring knowledge and skill to the table, which can be very valuable.”
Internships have become popular for young people who need a break from the hustle and bustle of modern life, especially in tech, but many companies still have strict policies about the types of work they offer.
Internships have been called “a form of unpaid internships” by some critics.
The U.K.-based nonprofit Institute for the Study of Labour has called for the industry to ban the practice and institute more training for workers.
It’s also calling on employers to ban internships, calling them a form of “opportunity-based exploitation.”
Some companies have taken action to prevent the practice, with the Labor Department issuing a statement this week calling internships an “inherently exploitative” way to get people to take unpaid jobs.
The board of the IAA says it has never officially banned internshipships, but it has been reviewing its internship policies.
Its members include universities and technology companies, as well as small business and nonprofit organizations.
It includes an annual conference called the “International Internship Conference,” which brings together about 2,500 companies from around the world.
It also sponsors a free internship program for college students.
About 200 internships are scheduled for next month.
