Marriotts international news article A hotel owned by Marriott International, a global hotel and tourism company, has been hit with a $5.5 million defamation lawsuit in a New York federal court, the first defamation case filed in the U.S. over allegations of the company’s alleged bias against the dairy industry.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Manhattan, accuses Marriott International of misleading consumers with its advertising about its loyalty programs and its reputation for being a “world-class destination for business travelers,” the New York Post reported.
Marriott International did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The suit is the latest in a series of lawsuits filed against Marriott over the company in recent years, including one filed in October 2015.
The company settled a previous defamation suit in August 2016 for $2.9 million.
In addition to the $5 million in damages, Marriott agreed to pay $1.3 million in costs to settle another lawsuit, which was brought by the National Dairy Council and its lobbyists.
The dairy lobby group alleged in the lawsuit that Marriott International promoted the company as a “high-quality destination” and as a destination for “business travelers.”
Marriott also settled a complaint filed by a former employee who claimed he was retaliated against for disclosing to his employer that he had filed a lawsuit against the company.
The New York case is the second defamation suit filed in recent months against Marriott.
In August, a jury in a Brooklyn federal court awarded $4.9 billion to the National Association of Hotel & Restaurant Employees, which claimed that Marriott, which owns the Marriotton International Hotel in Brooklyn, promoted its hotel as a resort destination and a “low-cost destination for high-end travelers.”
The National Dairy Coalition, which represents hotel and restaurant workers, said the settlement was a “significant victory for workers in the hospitality industry.”
“We’re pleased that the court has sided with the workers and their employers, who have worked tirelessly to get this litigation through the courts,” said Kristina Lohmann, the executive director of the National Alliance of Hotel and Restaurant Employees.
“We applaud the jury’s decision in this case.”
In February, Marriott announced that it was changing its business model, which included offering a range of hotels as an alternative to staying in the company hotels.
Marriott announced the change in July.
In an email to The Associated Press on Thursday, Marriott International said it was “fully committed to fair and transparent advertising and marketing,” and said it will continue to do so in the future.
“Marriott is a global hospitality company with more than 10,000 locations around the world,” the company said in a statement.
“Our focus remains on serving our guests and our communities, and that includes providing the highest quality experiences at affordable prices.”
