Republicans: Democrats should go nuclear on Trump
Republicans are increasingly calling on Democrats to go nuclear against President Donald Trump, with the former speaker of the House warning of “unprecedented damage” if Democrats fail to unite behind their president.
The latest development came on Thursday as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the party needs to be “more aggressive” with its opposition to Trump, who has repeatedly defied calls to resign over the allegations.
Pelosi said the Democrats are not “talking to each other” about how to handle the Russia investigation, and instead they are “going after each other in a way that I think is unprecedented.”
“They have no idea how bad it would be,” she said.
Democrats are set to hold a series of procedural votes on the Russia probe this week.
A key vote is expected on Thursday, as Democrats begin to take aim at Trump’s tweets that have triggered an avalanche of negative headlines.
The House Judiciary Committee has scheduled a hearing for Friday to examine whether Trump’s comments were illegal and whether his administration obstructed justice.
Republicans are also preparing to hold another vote Thursday on a resolution calling on Congress to impeach Trump.
That would be the first vote on the matter since he was sworn in as president.
Democrats and the president have sparred in the past over the Russia matter, with Pelosi repeatedly saying the president is not doing enough to investigate the allegations against him.
Pete Buttigieg, a former top aide to former President Barack Obama, said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday” on Thursday that it’s time for the president to get more involved in the investigation.
“The President has got to be involved in this,” Buttigigieg said.
“If he doesn’t get involved, I think he’s going to end up going to jail.”
Buttigieg added that if Democrats were to go after Trump directly, he would “feel it’s a very, very dangerous moment for us, not only for our party, but for our country.”
