The Latest on coronavirus disease outbreak in the Philippines
The Philippine Department of Health said Saturday that coronaviruses have been detected in 11 people, and they are all showing symptoms of a severe infection.
The Philippine Center for Disease Control and Prevention said the 11 people were among the nearly 500,000 Filipinos who are infected with coronaviral illness.
The Philippines is one of the first countries in the world to report an outbreak of coronavivirus.
The World Health Organization said Friday that more than 8.5 million people in the United States have been infected.
The U.S. State Department said it has received more than 3.5 billion samples from people who are being tested in the U.K., Germany, Canada and other countries.
The latest coronavirinavirus case in the Philippine capital, Manila, comes as the nation faces its worst outbreak of the coronavirence, the disease that causes acute respiratory syndrome, or respiratory syndrome.
There were two cases of coronvirus-related deaths in Manila.
The country also recorded one case of coronovirus-associated pneumonia.
“We are facing a pandemic that has no end in sight,” Mayor Joseph Estrada said Saturday.
“It’s time to take action.”
President Benigno Aquino III declared a state of emergency in Manila, the country’s largest city.
Aquino, who is also the countrys health secretary, said the government will spend $2.6 billion to fight the virus.
The national government is urging the public to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities.
