Posted September 21, 2018 09:16:09As the 2018-19 season gets underway, the NHL will be in full-blown turmoil with several players retiring and a new commissioner being appointed.
While the league is not expected to have a major shakeup, there are some major changes that could happen in the coming weeks.
The NHL is expected to begin a “long-term” overhaul of its governing body and will announce a new chairman soon.
The league has yet to confirm who that will be, but several former owners and owners of minority stakes have already said they are interested in taking over.
The NHL also announced on Thursday that the league would launch a new television partnership with TSN.TSN, which has a 24/7 broadcast rights deal with the league, is reportedly planning to launch a national sports channel, with a network focused on NHL players, this summer.TBS is a sports broadcaster, and the network is also expected to be in talks to acquire a large portion of the NHL’s TV rights.
ESPN, which also is a part of the network, is currently the dominant sports broadcaster in the United States, with more than 100 million viewers, according to Nielsen.
The NFL also will be undergoing a significant shakeup as former commissioner Roger Goodell is expected soon to be replaced by an executive vice president.
While the NFL did not immediately respond to The Associated Press’ request for comment, the league did say in a statement:”We are confident that this transition will help ensure the long-term health and stability of the NFL, and will be a positive, positive impact for all stakeholders, including our fans, players, owners and the NFL Network.”
The NFL has not publicly announced the new chairman, and Goodell has not yet confirmed that he will be the next commissioner.
He will take over from Robert Kraft, who is currently serving as a commissioner of the United Kingdom’s Football League.
Kraft, the founder of the New England Patriots and the owner of the Patriots, has long been rumored to be interested in becoming the next NFL commissioner.
Kraft did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
